Your back-to-school bucket list, Tehaleh edition

September can feel like a blur once the school year kicks into gear. Practices, intramurals, scrimmages galore! Lunches need packing, forms need signing, shoes need finding, and somebody inevitably gets a big wake-up-call test by the end of the month. But where’s the zest? Your fall needs some exciting flavors too!

There are still afternoons to fill, weekends to explore, friends to find, bikes to ride, parks to visit, and plenty of time after the final bell to squeeze a little more life into the day.

At Tehaleh, the transition between school time and outdoor time can be remarkably short. Here’s a little back-to-school cheat code: the new Hello Tehaleh app makes it super easy to see what’s happening around the neighborhood, from upcoming events to community news, all in one place. No digging around for that QR code you scanned three weeks ago or the screenshot with the event details buried somewhere in your camera roll.

That being said: Backpack down. Snack acquired. Back-to-School Bucket List is A-GO!

First Things First: Get Outside After School

There is something special about the stretch of time immediately after school. Kids have spent most of the day following schedules, moving between classrooms, listening, learning, and generally being asked to keep themselves relatively contained.

This is where freedom comes in.

Living in Tehaleh, getting outside does not necessarily require loading everyone into the car or planning an expedition. A trail walk, quick bike ride, or a playground stop at one of Tehaleh's 18 unique parks can begin shortly after everyone gets home.

That makes outdoor time easier to fit into a normal school night. Thirty minutes counts. An hour is even better. Save the giant mountain-climbing adventures for the weekends, and sprinkle in the good things throughout the week.

Your after-school checklist might include:

  • Walk or bike to a favorite Tehaleh park
  • Try a new trail in a neighborhood you haven't visited, or walk to Post & Pour for an after-school snack
  • Bring a ball, Frisbee, scooter, or bike outside
  • Take the dog along for an after-school loop at Hounds Hollow
  • Meet a friend at the playground, like Ruff 'N' Tumble or Skyline.
  • Pack a snack and eat it outside at Discovery Park's Fiesta Tables
  • Explore one (or two) of Trek Mountain Bike Park's different mountain bike trails
  • Let the kids pick the destination!
  • Read a couple chapters of a book at a park or trail with Mount Rainier views

No matter how the day goes, try to end it on a good note!

Make Room for the Neighborhood Crew

One of the best parts of the school year is that kids suddenly have stories again.

There are new classmates, old friends, recess developments of tremendous importance, and complicated social situations involving who is currently the fastest kid in fourth grade.

After-school time gives all of that somewhere to go.

A neighborhood park can become the meeting place. A trail becomes the route between houses. Bikes appear. Somebody brings a soccer ball. Another kid arrives. Then another. Soon, the yard becomes the host of The Games. Let them begin.

For parents, that can also mean a chance to walk with neighbors, catch up with another family, or simply spend a little time outside while the kids invent a new way to create mud and grass stains for the next hour.

School Nights Should Be More Fun

Tuesday deserves better.

So does Wednesday, for that matter.

Take dinner outside. Go for a bike ride before homework. Pick a park and stay until the sun sets. Walk a trail after dinner and see what has changed since last week.

These little outings give the school week some texture.

Remember the night we had a picnic?

Remember when we saw that weird bug?

Whoa, we saw a teacher outside of class!

Add a few extra activities to your normal routine, and soon you have some pretty interesting twists to the school week.

Check What’s Happening Around Tehaleh

Keeping track of what's happening does not need to become its own homework assignment.

The Hello Tehaleh app has been under development and is officially available for resident and public use. The app gives everyone a central place to check community news and upcoming events. Instead of trying to remember where you saw an announcement or wondering whether something is happening this weekend, families can use the app as a starting point.

That can be particularly useful during a busy school week. Have an evening unexpectedly open up? Take a look. Planning the weekend? Check it out!

Save a Few Things for the Weekend

Some adventures need more than the gap between the final bell and dinner, and that is where the weekend comes in.

Living in the Pacific Northwest gives families no shortage of possibilities, from trails and parks to farms, waterfronts, and classic fall outings.

The key is keeping the list manageable. Pick a handful of things that sound fun and let everybody contribute an idea.

Your fall weekend checklist could include:

  • Bike farther than your usual neighborhood route, or drop in to Trek MTB Park for a quick adrenaline-thumper
  • Visit a new park in the neighborhood
  • Go camping close to home
  • Pack a picnic and stay awhile
  • Go looking for fall colors (ahem, National Parks)
  • Visit a farmers' market, farm, or pumpkin patch
  • Explore a nearby lake or waterfront
  • Invite another family along on an outing
  • Take a rainy, wet walk with lots of puddles
  • Let the kids choose where or what to eat for a family dinner

You don't have to finish everything before winter. The point is simply to have some possibilities waiting when Saturday morning arrives.

Let Childhood Spill Past the School Bell

The school day takes up a big chunk of childhood, but it does not have to define the whole day. There are still trails to wander, parks to conquer, neighborhood friends to find, community events to stumble into, and perfectly ordinary Tuesday evenings that can become something worth remembering.

Pick a park. Try a trail. Invite a friend. Open the Hello Tehaleh app and see what’s happening around town!
